Default buy it or walk away???

I don't have any experience with the 2.2 engine, so I'm looking for some guidance here. The local newpaper listed a 99 Chevy S10 2.2 with engine problems. Contacted the owner and he sent over some pix and a few details. Body and interior look pretty good and truck has about 125k on the odometer.

He was on the interstate and heard a boom and then a clattering. Had truck towed to shop, where it was determined that one cylinder has NO compression. He said that they also told him that the timing chain is OK, but made no other diagnosis.....

What's the verdict of the forum? Thumbs UP? Thumbs DOWN?

I almost forgot, the price he's asking is $1500!!!

What might be more in line for this year/model/mileage?

Talk him down to 1200ish, and that wouldn't be a bad deal for a good body/interior. It probably dropped the cylinder so it'll probably need a completely new engine. Figure 5-800 for a used motor, 900-1100 for a rebuilt, or about 12-1600 for a remanufactured. So for about 2800 bucks you'll have a good running/driving truck!

Hmmmmm, I'm not familiar with the term "dropped the cylinder". I've seen a few aircraft engines that "swallowed a valve". That's when the valve head breaks off the stem and tumbles around in the cylinder. It usually beats the crap out of the piston, cylinder and the head.

KBB lists a private party price on a 99 S10 2.2 in excellent condition as $2500. I'm about to figure out that this guy's price would have to be in the $500 - $600 range if the engine has got to be swapped out. Flightline in Ft Smith, Arkansas list a reman 2.2 for $1375.00. Any additional parts, machine shop work, etc... would put it well over the PP value. Thanks for the input!
