Default ZQ8 Suspension Information/Part Numbers

The ZQ8 suspension setup lowered the S-series truck approx. 1.5". The actual ZQ8 RPO code has actually been seen in some of the first generation trucks, but they didn't actually lower the truck. Also, if you have any useful info you can add, let me know and I'll add it to the sticky.

Keep in mind that these parts also interchange with the first generation S-trucks as well. Some drilling may need to be done to mount components such as the hop shock.

If you want to get the full suspension kit, it can be found under PN# 12371217 from http://www.GMpartsdirect.com, along with the wheels, see part #'s below.

-Frame Brace (1) - located behind the cab, over gas tank; ties #1 box mount brackets together: 15989688

-Front Coil Spring (see following to determine which springs to order) - find part number of original springs from tape tag found on springs, and subtract 3 from last digit of part number, most V-6 trucks use spring 15654774, so new spring number would be 15654771 lowest part number available is 15654770

-Bolt (4): 11515216

-Front Shock Absorber (2): 22124808 new part # 22172398

According to the July '93 Sport truck Magazine "S-10 History Lesson"

Quote:
Though '84 didn't seem like a major year in S-10 development, this was the year Chevy got serious about sport truck handling. The S-10 was offered with a special ZQ8 sport suspention option that included performance rubber, a quick ratio steering gear, heavier stabilizer bar, and Bilstein gas shocks. For those who found out about it, The ZQ8 Package worked wonders making the S-10 Sport one of the best handling pickups on the road.
I've asked a couple times on all of the s10 forums about what exactly the Zq8 suspension on the first gen truck was, but most always said I was crazy and there was no such thing as a ZQ8 first gen hope this actually clarifies things for people.

Some 1st gen's had 215/65/15 tires, a quick ratio steering gear, heavier front stabilizer bar and heavy duty rear suspention. They were also supposed to come with Bilstein shocks. Also, Sonoma GT's were the most common 1st gen's to get the package. They have the ZQ8 RPO code stamped in the dash.

Early 2nd gen trucks (94-95) got the same parts as the first gens, (except for tire size).

Newer trucks (96+) recieved all of the above along with the hop shock and 1.5" lowered suspension using front coil and rear leaf springs.

More info:

The History of the S10 SS

The 2nd generation S10 was introduced in 1994. Along with that came the all new Chevy SS S10(RPO – B4U). About 2756 (est.) SS's were made a year. They were each equipped with the 4.3L V6 producing 180 hp and on up to 195 hp Stock!,and were all 4L60 automatic transmissions. The SS was introduced with only three colors:

Onyx Black

Summit White

Apple Red.

In 1994 and 1995, the SS came with 15" cast aluminum wheels, and chrome center caps and red bowties. SS badging and fog lamps were standard equipment as well. The rear-end was a 3.42 limited slip gear. In 1996 they received the upgraded ZQ8 suspension which now lowered the truck about 1.5 inches, had Bilstein shocks, fatter front and rear sway bars, in rear you had a anti hop shock that went from the axle to the frame, and a faster turning steering box. 1998 was the last year of the SS model, and also the first year the new front end was introduced. All SS S10 94-98 were all regular cab and step-side bed was available from 96-98.

Production #’s

1994 - 5,670
1995 - 1,619
1996 - 1,240
1997 - 1,459
1998 - 1,324

Also, the ZQ8 option (the lowered suspension, 16" wheels, and anti-hop shock) did not come on the 94-95 SS trucks. The 96-98 trucks DID come with those options and DID sport the ZQ8 label in the glove box. The Xtreme's took over the SS in 99.

Those are my 1992 Sonoma GT #0380 rpo codes & what they mean. I just tested the theory of the 1st gen ZQ8 rpo because my cruise/tilt column locks left @ 1 1/2 turn & back right @ 1 1/2 turn = 3 which makes it a 12:7:1 Quick ratio = the "ZQ8" gearbox. Now the truck has a beefier sway bar vs a regular 2wd of the same years but it's NOT as thick as the 2nd gen ZQ8 bars by any means. My truck came factory with BILSTEIN shocks, 215/65/15"s, ZQ8 gearbox, ZQ8 sway bar before the 2nd gen was re-introduced thicker, G80 Limited Slip Posi w/ 3.42 ratio & that's that~!!!

I know all of this due to looking up the information from http://www.gm-trucks.com/rpo-code-lookup/ & fellow Sonoma GT owners on SyTy.net who also verified their same codes correct for each truck.

However, Josh you can't go by those part #s anymore .... most all ZQ8 stuff is found on ebay from wrecked 2nd gens or junkyards as you've noticed. I've been told by so many 1st gen guys that most of the time dealers no longer have stock or find it by part #s as everything S10 has become or is becoming obsolete. Guess that's why people on craigslist want $600-$3500for plain jane long wheel base S10s & crap that doesn't run or runs like crap

Also, to anyone in the market for a 33MM ZQ8/Xtreme front sway bar. Do NOT let a salvage yard sell you a 33MM 4x4 front sway bar. They are shaped TOTALLY different and will NOT fit 2wd trucks.

b00nd0x himself had this problem after finding out that his 33MM 4x4 sway bar was not shaped the same as my 33MM ZQ8 2wd sway bar.

The 4x4 swaybar is flat, if you lay it on the ground it lays totally flat. The 2wd on the other hand is double stepped and flared out on either side to clear the frame rails and allow for articulation.
